The objective of the OCTAS project is to determine ocean circulation and transport from satellite observations in an interdisciplinary way were geodesy provides a detailed high precision geoid and satellite altimetry the mean sea surface. Due to the ocean circulation this surface deviates from the geoid. The difference will form an important input to oceanographers in observing and understanding the ocean circulation. An improved knowledge of the ocean circulation will also allow climate researchers in making more reliable predictions of the future.

OCTAS is financed by the Norwegian Research Council.
