The redistribution of water within the earth system is of vital importance to society and humanity. With 40% of the earth's population depending on water from the Himalayan/Tibetan region any changes in the water cycle for this region has huge consequences.

Geodesy contribute in monitoring the water cycles in several ways. Satellites measuring the gravity field do observe the effect of annual changes in the snow and ice coverage for large regions like the Himalayan/Tibetan region as well as changes in the water storage for the great river basins like the Amazon.

Continuous measurements over time may aid in determining variations due to climate change. Super conducting gravimetry and GNSS satellites do also contribute to increased information about changes in the ground water level but on a much shorter (local) scale.
