We managed to get an impression of the Sunday morning in Xi'an before departure to Xining and the Tibetan Plateu. Xining is completely different from the Xi'an landscape surrounded by beautiful sandy hills in shades of grey, red, violet, blue etc. Before we left Xi'an heading further west to Xining, we were early birds and got a glimps of traditional Chinese excercise and Tai Chi close to the magnificant ancient wall in Xi'an.

In Xining we were greated by the generous and knowledgable Mr. Huang from the Qinghai Surveying and Mapping bureau. Mr. Huang and Mr. Zhang who has years of experience from Tibet took us yak clothing shopping at a local factory outlet. We geared up with other stuff as well, all to be prepared for higher altitudes.

The stay in Xining and the trip to QInghai lake are in itself part of the preparation for Tibet. Xining is situated more than 2200 meter above sealevel (just a few hundred meters short of the highest mountains in Norway) and the Qinghai lake has an altitude of around 3500 meter. In fact measuring heights is part of the program at the Qinghai lake.

Geodesy is the theme of this journey, no doubt about that. But I'll have to tell you about what we eat - and also how we get rid of the reminicants....
